Human Resources Capitalizes at Career Fairs

The BC teacher shortage has created no shortage of opportunities to think beyond the scope of our own beautiful province to recruit qualified teacher candidates. One way to do this is by participating in career fairs across Canada.

The Abbotsford School District’s Human Resources Department is making the most of these exciting and energy-filled events. Between the months of October 2018 to May 2019, members of the HR team registered for a total 13 career fairs. Local fairs include UBC, TWU, SFU, UFV, UVIC and UNBC. The team is also targeting the University of Alberta, and several locations in Ontario.

Of the 13 career fairs mentioned, seven (7) are scheduled in Ontario. Most recently, our District participated in the Thunder Bay and Sudbury career fairs (January 16 and 18 respectively). Because of our efforts previously targeting these locations, Abbotsford is now experiencing a fundamental return on its investment. While at the fair in Thunder Bay, several graduating student teachers approached our booth to say they knew someone who moved to BC last year, is working for Abbotsford, and loves it! Attending the Sudbury career fair provided us with an excellent opportunity to target French-speaking teachers for our French Immersion program and other FSL teaching requirements. Since the beginning of the 2017 school year, Human Resources has recruited and retained 25-30 teachers from Ontario.

On-the-spot interviews are scheduled for those who are serious about moving to the BC Lower Mainland, reference checks are completed and, in many cases, offers are made.

The Human Resources team would like to thank the Principals and Vice-Principals who have volunteered to join us at these events, helping us to promote our wonderful school district and beautiful province.
