Halq’emeylem Teacher to teach accredited courses in Halq’emeylem 6-12 using the Ministry of Education curriculum. The position is designed for a forward-thinking, collaborative educator with a deep knowledge of Indigenous culture. The teacher will be responsible for supporting teachers to create an engaging, relevant and highly supportive learning environment for Indigenous students. The teacher will work collaboratively with support staff, teachers, department heads and administration to support and encourage Indigenous programs and staff in the school.

Education & Experience:

• Halq’emeylem language certificate required
• Teacher training with major practicum work at different levels (elementary, middle or secondary)
• Specific training in First Nations/Indigenous Education – e.g.: Major or Minor in Indigenous Studies/First Nations Studies
• Experience and ability teaching and supporting literacy learning
• Knowledge of enhancement support within the goals areas of the Indigenous Enhancement Agreement and the Local Education Agreement with Sumas and Matsqui First Nation
• Experience and knowledge of Sto:lo culture, teachings and protocols required,
• Experience sharing cultural knowledge of First Nations, Métis and Inuit People an asset
• Experience working with Indigenous learners and in Indigenous communities
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Eligible for B.C. Certification
• Satisfactory teacher evaluation and/or final practicum reports

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Demonstrated collaboration and willingness to attend district professional development in Indigenous education an asset
• Demonstrated awareness/understanding and experience with Indigenous culture
• Working knowledge of the district child abuse protocol and reporting procedures
• Proven ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with all internal and external contacts, working collaboratively in a team environment at all times
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable
• Ability to integrate technology and digital learning in the classroom
• Knowledge of curriculum, instruction and assessment
• Demonstrated ability to implement the new curriculum
