Our First Ever "New Teacher Meet-and-Greet"

On a recent trip to Toronto for a talent management workshop and a teacher recruiting event, the HR team started talking about our new teachers and how we could help to connect them to each other and our district. We began to brainstorm ideas on what would help both out-of-region and local teachers connect and build networks. Jenn Bennato quickly put up her hand to spearhead this initiative and recruited Tara Plantinga, who willingly accepted the challenge.

On Wednesday, December 4th, nearly 30 new teachers met at the Townhall Public House as a kick-off to our first ever "new teacher meet-and-greet"! The attendees enjoyed food and drink together, met new people and participated in a high-stakes game of Elf-On-The-Shelf, designed and hosted by Tara. It was a chance for leaders to re-connect with many of our new hires, and more importantly, an opportunity for our new teachers to meet their colleagues and share stories of the first days, weeks and months of their new career in Abbotsford.

Thanks to the willingness and energy of Jenn and Tara, this new initiative is off to a great start. Before leaving, each teacher filled out an exit slip indicating their choices for future events. We are confident the group will continue to grow as the word spreads, and more new teachers start their careers with us. And with activities like goat yoga, snowshoeing, paintball and an Ale Trail tour planned, there is no doubt this will be a popular connection point for teachers -- and another example of how working in the Abbotsford School District is much more than just a job.
